Brazilian territory formation

The contours of our country, as we see it today on a map, were not always the same. Watch:

To better occupy its South American colony, the Portuguese government decided to divide it into large swaths of land, which were called captaincies.

At that time, the captaincies had very different contours from the initials and the Brazilian territory already had a layout close to the current one.

In 1821, the captaincies were renamed provinces and in 1889 States, name that they keep until the present day.
